How to Choose the Right Laptop in 2025: A Buyer's Guide

With hundreds of options on the market, picking the right laptop can feel overwhelming. Here's everything you need to know — processor, RAM, display, and budget — broken down simply.

How to Choose the Right Laptop in 2025: A Buyer's Guide

Start With Your Use Case

Before looking at specs, ask yourself: what will you actually use this laptop for? A student writing essays has very different needs from a video editor or a gamer. Getting this right first saves you from overpaying for power you'll never use — or underpaying and regretting it a month later.

Processor: The Heart of the Machine

For everyday tasks (browsing, Office, video calls), an Intel Core i5 or AMD Ryzen 5 is more than enough. Step up to a Core i7 / Ryzen 7 if you're doing photo editing, coding, or light video work. For heavy video editing or 3D rendering, look at Core i9 / Ryzen 9 — or Apple's M-series chips, which punch well above their weight.

RAM: How Much Is Enough?

8 GB — acceptable for light use, but you'll notice the ceiling quickly.
16 GB — the sweet spot for most people in 2025. Handles multitasking, Chrome tabs, and creative apps comfortably.
32 GB+ — only if you're running virtual machines, heavy video timelines, or professional CAD work.

Storage: SSD Is Non-Negotiable

Avoid any laptop still shipping with an HDD as the primary drive. A 512 GB NVMe SSD is the minimum we recommend today. If you store large files locally, go for 1 TB. Remember you can always expand via an external drive or upgrade the SSD later on most models.

Display: Don't Overlook It

You stare at this screen for hours every day. A Full HD (1920×1080) IPS panel with good brightness (300+ nits) is the baseline. Creators should look for a display with sRGB coverage of 95%+. Gamers should prioritise refresh rate — 120 Hz or 144 Hz makes a real difference to smoothness.

Battery Life

Manufacturer claims are always optimistic. A laptop rated at "12 hours" typically delivers 7–8 in real use. For portability, aim for a battery capacity of 60 Wh or above. Also check if the laptop supports USB-C charging — a major convenience when travelling.
